In the evening of September 11, 2001, after a long and strange day of watching terrible news unfold on television, the Rev. John Watton, then rector of the Anglican parish of Badger’s Quay Pools Island in Newfoundland, got a phone call. Because of the total disruptions to air traffic that day, "38 commercial planes and four military aircraft [had been] forced to land at Gander International Airport. Somewhere around 6,500 passengers were stranded in Central Newfoundland, and the diocese had been asked if they could do just a little bit more outside of what our local central Newfoundland churches had already started."

The week that followed was an unusual one in the life of the community, the parish and the nearby diocesan camp, and for busloads of strangers who didn't really know where in the world they were...
